Invitations

I wanted to start out this party on the right foot and let people know what our theme was going to be. I had Michael get in his “construction” clothes (which included a hard hat) and took a picture of him. I put that on the front of the card and the inside read, “Michael is turning four. There’s a lot of work for us in store. Come to our construction site on June 16 th…it won’t be a bore!!! Your shift will be from 11 ‘til 1 with lots of work to do. Please call ahead to place your lunch order or you may not have an order…See you then!”

Party Tableware

How could I serve food in a construction environment? Well I decided to use paint trays and paint buckets. The kids thought that was pretty neat. I also placed drop cloths on the ground for the children to sit on during lunch and some games.

Food

Food: It stated on the invitation to call ahead with your phone order. This made it a lot easier to plan and prepare the food ahead of time. Each child got their choice of sandwich, juicebox, fruit and a bag of chips. There was a sticker on the front of their bag which said their name.

Cake: I had a great time designing the cake for the party. First, I baked two 9x13 cakes and frosted them both green. On one cake I dug out a hole and frosted the inside brown. I then placed a back hoe right next the hole and put cake on the hoe. It looked pretty realistic. On the other cake I positioned a dump truck right next to the cake full of cookie crumbs. I also placed a pile on the cake to make it look like it was dumping the dirt on the cake. Around each of the “work zones” I put little Kandy Korns to represent cones.

Party Favors

I put together little goody bags made from brown paper sacks. They included, pencils, candy, paint stirrers, play tool caddy and other construction things I could find at the dollar store.

Games and Activities

I wanted all of the games to fit the theme, so it took me awhile to come up with these games. The first game was called dirt toss. I painted a dump truck dumping dirt on a wood board and cut a couple circles in it. The kids tossed a bean bag through the holes. Next we played, Dress the builder. Each child was supposed to put on construction clothes as fast as they could. It was a blast. Next we played pin the tool on Bob the Builder. I blew up a picture of Bob the Builder and had each child try and put a tool on his tool belt.

Our last activity was the best. My husband setup a “obstacle course” in our backyard. The first activity was to drive our son’s power wheels about 20 feet across the yard. They then had to pick up our play shovel and put one shovel’s worth of dirt in the wheelbarrow. They then had to push the wheelbarrow 15 feet back across the yard. Next, they had to hammer a golf tee into a piece of Styrofoam and then take off for the finish line. While they were running towards the finish line they needed to weave in and out between 4 sawhorses. The kids really loved this game!
