Location

Since Calvin’s party falls in June, we decided to have the party at the local park. We invited about 35 guests and didn’t want the hassle of cleaning our house after they left. The weather was perfect that day, so we couldn’t have asked for anything more.

Invitations

I decided to make the invitations on my own this year. I got pictures of all the Sesame Street characters (Big Bird, Ernie, Bert, Oscar and Elmo) and put them right on the front. On the top I put a picture of Calvin. The inside read, “The word is out…come have some fun, Elmo’s friend Calvin is turning One.” Below that were the party details, date, time, etc.

Decorations

I chose to decorate with the store bought Sesame Street 1 st Birthday Décor.

Party Tableware

I had enough Sesame Street tablecloths to cover each table. I used solid colors for the cups, napkins and plates. The colors were blue, yellow, red and green. I had a few Sesame Street balloons tied to the cake table and about 50 solid color balloons tied to all the kids tables.

Food

Food: Calvin is a pretty picky eater, so we wanted to pick some of his favorite foods. We made hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill. I also prepared some other side dishes like pasta salad, macaroni salad, mac & cheese and deviled eggs. Some of the kids like PB&J so I had a few of those on hand too.

Desert: I made cupcakes with Elmo’s face on them. I died the vanilla icing red to color Elmo’s face. His eyes were made from diced vanilla wafer cookies with vanilla icing spread on them. I placed mini brown M&M’s for the pupil in the center of the cookie. The nose was an orange skittle and mouth was decorative gel. They looked great!

Cake: I bought a cake from the local bakery that said, “Happy Birthday Calvin.” They also put a picture of Calvin in the middle of the cake and the bottom read, “brought to you by the letter C and the number 1.”

Party Favors

I purchased party favor bags at our local party store. In them were the candy from the piñatas, Elmo crayons, Elmo notepad, bouncy balls, mini bubbles, crazy straws, Elmo memory cards and a few other miscellaneous items.

Games and Activities

I kept the children busy by having them color letters and numbers I printed out from the Sesame Street website. I put more than enough crayons on each table so they wouldn’t fight. After that we played pin the nose on Elmo and broke 2 piñatas. I had one for the older children and a pull string for the younger ones. Our last game was Calvin trivia. I asked questions about Calvin to see how well people knew him. For example, when did he get his 1 st tooth or what is Calvin’s weight. It was a lot of fun. The winner got a gift certificate to the mall.

Miscellaneous

The party was a huge success due to this website. It gave me the inspiration I needed to complete such a task. It is nice to hear what other parents are doing and I hope people keep submitting their ideas so next year there will be hundreds of themes for me to choose from. Thanks again!
