Invitations

I love making invitations because I feel they represent the party. I first started by buying rainbow paper from the local craft store. I printed on them, “Attention Munchkins! Come over the Rainbow with Amanda as she celebrates her 5th birthday.  Follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City and help Amanda melt the witch to get her broom so she can go home.” I then included all the pertinent party information, date, place and RSVP.  I also included on the bottom for each child to come dressed as their favorite Wizard of Oz character. On the bottom I included, “We’re off to Amanda’s birthday party, the most wonderful party of all!”

Ice Breaker Activities

To get the children in the mood and under control, I had them decorate their very own crowns with gems, stickers and glitter.

Food

Idea for Food:

Our family is a big BBQ fan. So of course we served a variety of BBQ foods. The children and parents loved it!

Idea for Cake:

I had a hard time finding a theme cake at the store, so I decided to try and make my own. I chose to make a rainbow cake for follow after the show. TO start, I baked round cake. I iced the top half with blue icing and the bottom half with green icing. Next, I took 6 colors of M&M's and made a large rainbow on the blue side. Then I took yellow icing to make the bricks. Finally, I found a cake topper for sale and I purchased it. I was the perfect topper to the cake.

Party Favors

I wanted to provide as many child as possible on the van than take the bus. I made their bags of our brown paper sacks. I then cut them to have handles. I then filled them up with miniature Wizard of Oz items.

Games and Activities

I feel that the games and activities is what makes a party either successful or just another party. I wanted to build the yellow brick road into the party, somewhere. So to get started, I made the yellow brick road out of a gold plastic tablecloth and drew bricks on it. I sent the children off on the yellow brick road until they reached their first house. In front of the house was a pair of ruby red slippers. Amanda put these shoes on and the group continued on the path. The next house I put flowers to represent munchkinland and had two miniature dolls standing by a basket full of suckers. As they continued on, their first activity was a bubble blowing activity. The prize for blowing the biggest bubble is a big jar of bubbles. The next activity involved throwing a hula hoop around a scarecrow. The winner received the scarecrow to take hom. We then played a game of pass the tin man's heart. If you had the heart when the music stops, you must sit out, but they got a large piece of candy for trying. The next stop was Emerald City. I took a large cardboard box and made a door to look like Emerald City. I painted the outside When they arrived, there wasn't anyone here to meet me. I love watching other people paint and thanks to this website, I was able to live the truth..
