Location

We weren’t really to enthusiastic to have the party at our house, so we rented our local clubhouse. They allowed us to transform the rooms into a “bear” theme. It looked great.

Invitations

To start the party, I had to come up with the best invitations. I found this great stationary that had country bears printed on the top and bear paw print border around the edge. I printed them out on my computer and they read, “Your invited to a very “beary” special 1 st birthday party for Steven.” After that I included the date, time and other important information. I folded the invitations in thirds and printed paw prints "coloring book" style on the back of each invitation for the kids to color. Three primary crayons were included in each invitation and the envelope was sealed with a paw print sticker.

Decorations

My mother has this bear that is about 5 feet tall and Steven just loves it. With that in mind, I borrowed the bear, made birthday clothes for it and put it right in the entrance. All the guests loved it…it looked so adorable. Next to the bear were 12 photos of Steven…1 for every month since he was born. Next to the photo album was a clipboard with some decorative stationary where we asked the guests to writing something to Steven. This will be placed in his time capsule. For the decorations in the room, I went all out for bears. I hung bear posters, printed bear coloring pages and anything else bears online…I printed and hung it.

Party Tableware

We decided not to buy any pre-made party tableware and to just use solid colors. We chose brown, white and yellow. Each table was covered in tablecloths that alternated in color as well as the plates, cups and forks. I stamped each napkin with a bear paw print. Each table had a teddy bear in the middle.

Costumes

I purchased enough bear hats for each child to wear one during the party.

Food

Food: We had a lot of guests so we wanted to make we had enough food. We served cold cuts and meatball sandwiches served on homemade rolls shaped like bears. I served trail mix with honeycomb cereal, marshmallows, teddy grahams, etc.

Cake: I had a great time trying to design and bake a 3-D bear cake. I baked enough 3-D bear cakes for each child to have their own. For the parents I baked a sheet cake with paw prints on top. Each of the 3-D bears were holding a stick balloon that said, “ Happy First Birthday.”

Party Favors

I was trying to be creative when coming up with a first birthday party favor. I decided to give out porcelain bear picture frames that would include a picture of each child sitting on the bear’s lap. On the picture it would read, “A “beary” good time! Steven’s 1 st birthday party 6/24/2004.

Games and Activities

I didn’t plan any “real” games for this party, but I wanted them to be entertained while the parents mingled. I made little stations in the back of the room that included a kick start, mobile, tunnel, push toys and other little gadgets 1 year olds love.
