Invitations

Read: Camp Dylan turns 5, bring your camping gear and appetites for an afternoon of fun @ Camp Dylan. The invitations were placed in brown paper bags decorated with camping stickers and I placed a granola bar, pine cone and rubber snake in each bag.

Decorations

We decorated the church gym with tents, blow up alligators and candles, glow in the dark stars, spiders, bugs & snakes. We also had rubber snakes and bugs near the campsites. The lights were dim and tables were lit up with metal lanterns.

Ice Breaker Activities

When the children arrived they were directed to the table where we had butterfly coloring pages, crayons, and butterfly stickers to play with.  I had a beautiful butterfly video playing on the television.  There was also a little table set up with a butterfly puzzle, a dozen vinyl butterflies and a dozen vinyl caterpillars they could play with. Each child had a butterfly tattoo applied on either their face or hand.  Everyone was then given a butterfly necklace (even the boys wanted them which surprised me).

Food

Food: I had trail mix in tin plates & gummy worms in oreo dirt on all the tables. The afternoon started with roasted hot dogs (in the crock pot), chips, smores, fruit and of course bug juice (green punch w/ plastic bugs floating).

Party Favors

We passed out brown lunch bags to put the candy in after the pinata was broken. As the children left, Dylan gave them a nap sack filled with goodies...I made up snack size bags of trail mix, dirt and worms (two oreos and gummy worms), granola bar, compass rings, binoculars, rubber frogs & alligator clappers. I wrapped the items in red material and tied the sack with raffita and then tied it to bamboo sticks to create a nap sack look. You could also place them in an inexpensive box to create a tackle box. All the campers also got to keep the flashlight they used on the snake hunt.

Games and Activities

After lunch we gave all the children a small flashlight and we went on a snake, bug & alligator hunt. They loved looking for the snakes and the glow in the dark bugs were easy to find with the lights out. Then we gathered around the campfire (logs with a red rotating light and tinsel to make the crackling noise) for campfire songs on the guitar. The children sang and at the end the parents participated in the hokey pokey with the campers. We then sang "Happy Birthday" to the birthday boy and had cake. After cake the campers gathered around the smaller then where we had placed all the gifts and watched Dylan open presents. We then let all the campers take a swing at the Lizard & Alligator pinata's.

Thank You Notes

During the day I took individual pictures of the campers in a camping chair in front of the tent and campfire. When the pictures were developed I placed them in a foam frame with a "Happy Campers" logo glued to the top (from the local scrapbook store) and a note from my computer that read..."Thank you campers!!" Thanks for helping us celebrate Dylan's 5th birthday, etc...We passed these out about a week after the party. It was a busy afternoon at "Camp Dylan", but we've never had so much fun camping inside. Have a great camping party and I hope you can use some of our camping ideas.

Miscellaneous

Trail mix...chex cereal, M&M's, pretzels, honey roasted peanuts. Serve lunch in tin or aluminum pie pans and if you save your soup cans they make great camping cups for bug juice. Just make sure there are no rough edges on the cans to cut little lips. "Happy Camping!!"
